*waves* This is about Hypogean Irkens, a subspecies of Irkens living below ground on Irk. These are heavily inspired by secretlabz 's Noyings. If anyone wants to make a hypogean irken, you're absolutely welcome to.
They diverged from what would eventually become modern spacefaring Irkens after the introduction of PAKs, deliberately hiding underground. Most hypogeans are descended from Irkens who went underground after the introduction of PAKs, but some members of their society either are former smeetery escapees or are descended from one. They sometimes adopt smeets that escaped from smeeteries, but adult spacefaring Irkens are likely to be chased off at best. Due to their isolation underground for over a million years, hypogeans have adapted for life spent almost completely underground, with smaller eyes, smaller bodies, longer antennae, longer limbs, flexible joints, stronger claws, and loss of pigmentation. Their diets are more carnivorous than spacefaring irkens, but hypogean irkens will eat almost anything. Scavenged food from spacefaring irken refuse heaps are an important food source. They farm cave fungi and certain cave animals.
They are just as clever as any spacefaring Irken, and arguably cleverer, as they have no PAKs. Most of their technology is caving gear, and they wear spelunking clothes to protect their bodies from sharp rocks. Hypogean Irkens also have kneepads, elbowpads, and caving gear as part of their standard wardrobe, a holdover from their caving ancestors, which topside Irkens are also descended from. They steal technology from spacefaring Irkens and have successfully reverse-engineered technology such as screens and computers multiple times.
Hypogean irkens speak an archaic form of Irken. Due to their isolation, the dialect they speak has not changed much since ancient times.
Hypogean irkens have a high tolerance for pollutants and metals in water, but it can still harm them. Some hypogean irkens can actually swim!
Hypogean irkens are very, very good jumpers and climbers, and have a thriving parkour subculture. Some like to sneak above ground to test their skills, though this is extraordinarily dangerous and very frowned upon.
Hypogean irkens use bioluminescent organisms as light sources.
They have a very low population density, and their population has declined over the millennia due to pressure from topside irkens, low food availability, malnutrition, genetic diseases, accidents, infighting, and other causes. There is speculation that the population may be entering mutational meltdown and may go extinct.
