hi gamers I'm here quickly to drop off another cool guy before I go elsewhere: The Spittlebug!! They're called that bc the nymphs make a foamy kinda substance for protection and to keep warm (it's kindof their house)and it looks like spit a little (i thought it was bubble liquid or washing liquid when I saw some near my house lol). I've also known people who call it frog-spit. It's made out of air (hence the bubbles) and some liquid from some gland I don't actually know what it is. They eat the sap of plants which is why you'll see this substance on the stems.

So, fun fact! Hymenopterans (sawflies, wasps, bees, ants, IRKENS) are probably ancestrally parasitoids who secondarily lost this trait. (Not all of them though, some of them still have it).

I haven't seen many bugs bc it's still wintery and I haven't been out to wooded places much but I ordered a pocketguide for IDing insects in my area and that's coming in a few days

I'll submit the Tarantula Hawk, these things are named because they prey on tarantulas and lay their eggs in them. There's also a species on Dragon Cave based on them

i got to hold a stick insect a couple days ago specifically "Achrioptera manga"(lol) (stick insect from Madagascar (the place not the film))! the males are confusing the hell out of scientists (who discovered it fairly recently iirc? maybe 8-10 years ago? or at least discerned it from another thats kinda similar don't quote me on that) because they're bright turquoisey cyan for No Evident Reason. this is a colour that makes them very easy to be spotted by predators. the females are a brownish stick colour though, and way bigger. they both have spikes on them and use their little wings (that are too small to fly with) to try and scare predators (apparently this rarely works). funny little guys.
