I'm thinking about how absolutely LOUD Irken cities must be. Billions, even trillions of Irkens in each city, hundreds of thousands of ships constantly flitting about, the rumble of machinery, the buzzing of electricity and the whirr of fans. The smell of Irkens and cooking fast food and fuel exhaust and plastic and metal and rotting garbage. Rip to any and all autistic Irkens who are sensitive to sounds and smells. You had better hope you get desensitized quickly, or you're going to have a bad time.

Irkens would probably find the smells and sounds of an Irken city and being surrounded by miles and miles of metal and plastic just as comforting as we would find our hometown or the woods in our backyard. As inhospitable and miserable as it may seem to us, it's probably home-y to them.

That sounds like a secret area in a video game that you can access after getting the special ability. That could be cool as fuck in a story. Like, a secret hideout that can be accessed through the clawholds that are strategically placed on an old wall to look like it had been damaged over time. I have never wanted to write a fanfic more badly in my life, I swear. Non-Irkens or Irkens who don't know the clawholds trying to access the hideout, failing, and falling to their deaths. You probably have to be very, very good at jumping and judging distances (and also avoiding security cameras and the authorities) to make it as an Irken urban explorer for very long. It's probably a good thing it doesn't rain on Irk, because with all that metal the surfaces of their cities would be unpassable.

LOVING the fact that irks surface looks like an overly-industrialized oaklahoma. FLAT FLAT FLAT FLAT FLAT and full of factories?! the ground itself looks like it's covered in metal... or is it dirt? we don't get many looks at irk.....
but i have this weird vivid memory of there being a whole scene dedicated to Tak taking her first exam, where we got to see quite a bit of irks surface, the builds were plated in metal with the rivets of the bolts showing, there were automatic doors and stuff, and the ground was like, dirt.... i'm almost 80% positive this memory is FALSE because i've scrubbed all the instances of tak appearing and cannot find this, we just get the very short scene where Zim traps her i think? i don't know why i have this very specific memory, but i do. she was holding a paper map and looking at it because she was kinda lost? idk. fake memory logic.

There’s a shot of Devastis that might be what you were referencing? Also, with the you mentioning your headcanon of Irk being flat and industrialized (which I love) I am inevitably reminded of Florida. Most of the state is pretty flat aside from parts of central and north Florida with hills, but there are massive underground aquifers running through the state, as well as sinkhole caves. I love the idea of Irk being flat as a pancake on the surface while being buzzing with activity below ground.

One of the buildings has an arrangement of “eyes” similar to the Control Brains. Also, there’s a green Invader symbol on the buildings. The background foreshadowed what was going to happen to Tak. Also, Devastis is the only Irken building/city to be grey and green rather than purple and pink. Just goes to show that the folks on Devastis don’t mess around.

Irken public architecture. As you can see, Irk (or at least this particular bit of it) is a flat as a pancake, highly industrialized, and has skyscrapers that kind of look like termite mounds. There's also some kind of cord connecting the buildings-maybe for power, or as a walkway? Also, a lot of their buldings have the curse of curves and are built on an angle. They slant. Some of the buildings have openings or windows that look like the mouth of caves. Irk either has roads or runways across the planet's surface-or maybe those are pipes, because of the shading? BETELGEUSE look right next to Red's gauntlet. That looks a lot like a factory to me.

I just realized: Devastis isn't completely industrialized. There are mountains and cliffs in the background.

That's where they let all the elites loose they pass then they let them out in the mountains Maybe they run training exercises and drills up there? I'm obsessed with the idea of feral Elite trainees loose in the mountains for weeks or months.

Having a non-industrialized training area makes sense, because a lot of the planets Irkens go to invade aren't industrialized or have areas that aren't industrialized (possibly Blorch, Invader Flobee's planet).
