Since we're having Zim takes this fine day, I'm obsessed with the idea that Zim is a heroic figure for defective and short Irkens who want to change the Empire. It sounds weird but hear me out on this: Zim actively fights against the idea that he needs to be short to be an invader, even arguing against his tall superiors. It would also be painfully ironic that the character who is the most bootlicking Irken alive is also the one being upheld for fighting against the system the most. Zim would hate all of the people hailing him as a hero once he finds out the reason. He'd see the think pieces about him and be horrified because people think he hates his Tallests and superiors. Oh, I love this. I'd also argue that Bob and Skoodge could fill the same roles, but Skoodge is kind of neutral on the Tallest and just disappeared after Hobo-13, before people could idolize him, and Bob is bitter and disabled (in my headcanon anyway), and neither of them are as charismatic as Zim or fit Irken beauty standards as well and were given (presumably fatal, very public) punishments for not acting as short Irkens should. Not to mention that Zim expressed that he can be an invader despite his height during the incredibly public and televised event that was the mission assigning for Operation Impending Doom II. He interrupted the mission assigning and directly begged for his leaders to give him a mission.

And Zim was the only short Irken, the only Irken, to publicly challenge the highest and second-highest authorities in all of Irkdom and get away with it. He got a sandwich and a mission from the Tallest after escaping from his punitive assignment, for Pete's sake.

Given that Zim killed so many people, including two previous leaders, Red is very patient with him. He gave Zim his food, gave him a fake mission instead of throwing him out of the Great Assigning, waited two hours for him to stop talking, and banished him after completely ruining Operation Impending Doom I. Any other Tallest would've killed him several atrocities ago.

I think it's because of Red. The two can be jerks to each other, but they are the characters with the strongest bond, and he wouldn't make a decision like that on his own. If you're the type that doesn't subscribe to the theory that they're in love, Purple probably doesn't want to do the paperwork and negotiating involved because Red usually does their work.

Red and Purple's relationship really is something special in the world of IZ. I can't think of any other characters who openly get along as well as they do. *points* Love those Greem Beam Bois.

Purple knows if he did that, Red would never forgive him, to me, Zim is like... an experiment to Red, he wants to see just how much nonsense Zim can do, he wants to examine him like a lab rat, organically, giving him total free reign, how will Zim act? if left to his own devices entirely and isolated from all other irkens, will he manage to conquer a planet? or will he lose his entire damn mind? what sorts of atrocities will he commit? Can tall creatures really be stupid, as Zim said about the humans? They're tall, and yet....stupid?I FIRMLY stand my ground in saying this; Zim has contributed to irken science and knowledge by his atrocities and his horribleness on Urth. and Red is very interested.
if Zim went missing, Red would know who the culprit was (if he didn't see it himself that is)
(thats my theory anyway.....)

i also think, since it's confirmed in "the trial" that Red / Purple / Zim are the same (or similar) age(s) and they were in elite training together, it's VERY plausible that Zim and Red could have.... even been friends at some point!?

So I was doing an experiment with mealworms in my science class today, and I kept saying things like, "I can't do my evil mad science cackling if you won't stay still, my mealy test subjects", and "Mealy mealy worms, stop squirming. Your Science-god commands it". Can someone check me for a PAK so I know I'm not turning into Zim?

(thats my theory anyway.....)You hit the nail on the head, I think. Red definitely wants to see how much chaos Zim can cause (and also what cool stuff he can invent). Zim's Energy-Absorbing-Thingy would have been great against energy beings like the Meekrob if it hadn't run off.

I think that Red recognizes that Zim is actually incredibly intelligent but the errors just make him a chaotic dangerous mess. but the errors also makeway for brilliance, in shining moments. Zim has actually invented many useful things! too bad he uh, killed two tallests with one of them.

Please expand on your thoughts. -SMACKS HAND ON WHITEBOARD- if we examine Red's reaction in the trial " YOU KILLED TALLEST MIYUKI?!" we can see that he is betrayed and hurt. he has exhibited two things here: 1. He knew Miyuki personally 2. Zim having killed Miyuki is uncharacteristic of him somehow. 3. Red knows Zim more than he lets on and then how Zim reacts in a panic "uuhh...ehh...NOOooooooOOOOoooo! shes FIiiIIIiiIIinnnEE! i just talked to her last week." but when Purple was accusing him he didn't react so panicked. 1. Zim knew Miyuki personally (elite scientist!) and had no reason to kill her (Possibly because Miyuki bounced him from job to job to keep him alive and see if he could actually be useful) 2. Zim and Red know each-other better than they let on. 3. (it's plausible that Miyuki faked her death, and Zim could be telling the truth here.) (circles point on whiteboard furiously) Pepe Silva, wait, i'm on the wrong side of the white board-
