things that kind of bug me: irken uniforms all being the same as the invader uniform, both in canon and fanon. whadda hell Unfortunately, there's kinda evidence backing it up (Devastis trainees, random Irkens, Shloogorgh's employees, and Invaders all wear the same base uniform)...but that doesn't mean we can't be peeved about it. yeah canon design ideas i guess can make a little sense (visual shorthand for irkens, keeping them with a cohesive visual Look amongst all bg/minor irkens) but like at the same time theres other ways to tie character design outside of the "uniform" all irkens supposedly have. i think its mostly that ppl working on iz (both comics and tv show) didnt really give it much thought as some rando spec bio nerd on the internet bc its a cartoon for 7 year olds

Remembered this thread exists and I'm thinking about the "Zim turns rebel" plot, if I hadn't mentioned my thoughts here before. Honestly, I don't think it's in his nature to ever do that. He's programmed to respect his leaders and serve his empire, but it's far more intense than other Irken characters. He goes to extreme lengths to prove himself as useful and instead blames himself when he found out The Massive flight path wasn't going to Earth. Zim's thought process was "The Tallests aren't coming, which means I'm a failure" instead of "The Tallests aren't coming, which is a problem with them that I can't stand". The most I can see is him wrecking the empire on accident and it being interpreted as on purpose by other people. Zim is interesting in the sense that his ego is so inflated, but it immediately bursts when people aren't around to give him attention.

This has got me thinking...if Zim was physically attacked by the Tallest, would he even try to defend himself. Would he try to dodge or block their attacks, or would he just stand there and take it? Would he even see it as an attack, or would he just think they were playfighting?

The only thing I can think of similar is the comic where the Tallests talked Zim into hurting himself and humiliating himself in public after he accidentally receives an enormous ball of cheese. Even if Zim saw it as an attack, he would know to never hurt his Tallest. Even in The Trial, Zim is seen as being aware that himself killing Miyuki and Spork was bad, even pre-planning being called out on it by bringing a replica of Spork, in comparison to his other actions.

Ough...that's painful. I can also imagine him trying to not show that he's hurting even as they're beating him to pulp. He cannot show pain in front of his BEST FRIENDS. THE ALMIGHTY TALLEST.

It's worse after considering the parallels drawn between Zim and Dib, especially in Enter the Florpus. More specifically, the part where Zim likens Professor Membrane to Dib to the relationship between himself and his Tallests. It's more than just friendship in his eyes, it's something like how a child seeks approval from their parents. It's like learning that your parents hate you more than anything.

Considering that they were grouped together as smeets and then for invader training later in life, there's a lot of stuff we didn't get to see. Both memories shown of the Tallests when they were younger involved them ridiculing Zim, and Red stating that he would make Zim defend for his life on trial if he were tallest. That's pretty much him stating that he would publicly execute Zim in his teenage years, through some rough math.

Child One: I'm going to give you the electric chair when I become president.
Child Two: Aw thanks :)

dunno who it was that posted this on tumblr (or if theyre on here) but honestly it really is so disappointing that a medium like the iz universe, which has like, so much to work with, is reduced to a backdrop for shipping something so fucking mediocre... theres so much you can do with the iz universe, theres so much room for spec bio and commentary and just plain satire and silliness i wish that shipping culture isnt what popularizes fandoms primarily nowadays we could have So Many discussions about this Y7 nickelodeon cartoon introducing concepts of "imperialism bad, specifically in this way" and "nationalism is inherently self destructive and will breed individuals who have no critical thinking"

Literally. I feel like shipping was the main topic of discussion in fandoms, even back then. The shipping material in Invader Zim is nonexistent and the topics for non-shipping stuff in the story is enormous. Like, shit, I'd would love to see a fandom-wide discussion on alien biology and technology in the fandom. I think that the Tallests, Control Brains, and Irken announcers are particularly interesting, but PAKs are also super interesting to talk about.
